Have you got your tickets yet? Some sessions have almost sold out already, but there are still plenty of great films to see. Australian film 'El Monstro Del Mar!' is a great one (and just won best film at MUFF), while Aussie actor Noah Taylor says 'Red, White and Blue' is the best film he's worked on to date. Red White and Blue is screening on closing night (come for the films, stay for the after-party!). More goodies include schlock-horror 'The Taint' (destined to be a cult classic), and we have a fantastic line up of short film sessions such as 'Recycled Cinema' and 'Animation Fornication' - you can watch the trailers for these and our other short film sessions here: http://www.suff.com.au/#shortFilmSessions.

Following the Wild success of her Honours performance season, Blonde Emma Maye Gibson is now head down, bottom up in a mating ritual with her text books and friendly laptop writing her exegesis. She intends to come out of hibernation in time for the Sydney Fringe season of Blondes in the Wild, playing at the Italian Forum Cultural Centre on the 21st, 23rd and 24th of September.
Blonde Emma Maye will be participating in a day of academic discourse on Metamorphoses: Transformations, Transgressions. As night falls, the other members of the herd will descend on the Academic institution for an evening of Performance based exploration where they will present an excerpt from Blondes in the Wild.
Blonde Ambition lifts its breasts in support of the wonderful Blonde Emma Maye and stamp their stilettos in congratulations of her mammoth effort in her honours performance!
Addressing a lack of diversity in the Australian theatre world, The Colour Blind Project is campaigning to reflect multicultural Australia in the performance world, and, like the US and UK make colour-blind integrated casting a common industry practice.
“Why have we have not seen an Asian lead character in a sitcom or romantic comedy? Why do we never see a male character, of middle eastern background for example, play the hero?” Are all questions asked by The Colour Blind Project co-Artistic Directors Josipa Draisma and Stephanie Son.
“Josipa and I, both performers and feeling frustrated with the lack of diversity that we would see when we went to the theatre or turned on the TV, decided to be proactive about encouraging a change in the Industry. We wanted to see the reality of multicultural Australia reflected on our stages and on our screens,” says Stephanie.
The pair created The Colour Blind Project in 2009, an arts initiative that truly showcases multicultural and Indigenous performers and challenges the stereotypes that exist in the Australian Arts and Entertainment Industry. It’s supported by organisations including Urban Theatre Projects and Playwriting Australia, as well as other artists including Candy Bowers, Robyn Loau and Paul Capsis.
“Unfortunately there is still a practice in the Industry that reaffirms the anglo-centric idea of what it means to be Australian; to push the agenda of the Australian stereotype of the blonde haired, blue eyed beach guy or girl. The reality is that Australia is much more than that,” they say.
“Occasionally there is a character on TV or on stage that is multicultural or Indigenous, but often it’s a stereotype or at best, tokenistic.”
“What we wanted to do was find talented actors from all different backgrounds who often get sent to the castings for ‘Thai prostitute’ or ‘taxi-driver’ or ‘wog girlfriend’ and give them roles that showcases their talent, rather than just the colour of their skin.”
Both Stephanie and Josipa cite the project as being extremely well received within the industry and by audiences, and they say the support is incredible inspiring.
The next production for The Colour Blind Project will be ‘Shakespeare In Full Colour’, with an integrated cast of all cultural backgrounds as part of the Sydney Fringe Festival at the New Theatre in Newtown between September 10 and 26. More: thecolourblindproject.org

In the lead up to theSydney Fringe A Thing of Beauty is playing the late sessions at The Old Fitzroy Theatre and is getting terrific reviews!
“Whilst there is an avalanche of travel stories out there, writer/director Paul Gilchrist has chosen to expose in one play the psychology, sociology, politics and phoniness behind our fascination with travel. And he does it all with a combination of laugh-out-loud one-liners and attention to detail in vivid recollections of adolescent memories….. one perfectly cast actress, in this case Jo Richards, keeping an audience captivated for the entirety of a play about traveling …..Julia Roberts’ Eat, Pray, Love may be the most highly-anticipated travel story this spring but I reckon our very own Jo Richards will give the other J.R. a run for her money…….one inspired one-woman show.” Alternative Media

"….non-stop energy, laughs and no time to glance at your watch, it comes to an end and you are left wanting more…….It is impossible not to see someone you know in either of our two female characters which allows the audience to be captivated by Richards' performance….. A Thing of Beauty has light and shade and possesses emotional depth. It is another great example of clever writing from Gilchrist and of Richards' talents.…..see it before it sells out and you miss out on a fine piece of theatre."

And this is our review from the sneak preview earlier in the year:
".......subtlenuance last evening presented a sneak preview of their pop-up theatre experiment, A Thing Of Beauty. And it was. It was also, moreover, a thing of affecting comedy and incisive social commentary, performed solo, and brilliantly, by Newtown actor, Jo Richards. As an actor, of course, it's always reassuring to know you've got great material with which to work and it doesn't get a whole lot better than that written, and directed, by Paul Gilchrist.
.........I'm not known for brevity, but I'll make an exception, in honour of this piece which is short, sweet, piquant and pithy. I'm hoping it'll galvanise a cult following, and pop-up will become as commonplace as MKR. It deserves to.
Pop along and see it."

Who are you? What is your background?
I'm the actor and writer behind The Margin Of Things. I have a keen love for theatre and film. I grew up around the beaches of the eastern suburbs. I knew from an early age that I had gift for making people laugh but only really got serious about acting and comedy at the end of high school. And this comedy thing really only took a hold of me in my final year at WAAPA where I did a short film that really killed as a comedy. I had a blast. The director and I became close friends, Sam Barrett, remember that name, and we have done a number of other things since.
What attracted you to ‘The Margin Of Things’?
Well I wrote the thing. So I better be attracted to it. But what I have come to like about it, since rehearsing it away from being the writer in the room, although that probably never goes, is that even during all the shit storm that is going on that it still gets a laugh.
Tell us about the role your playing?
I'm playing Mark. Who is a slippery little beast. While he is someone that says he is between things at the moment and on struggle street due to the dole, he actually comes from a family of real money and importance. He's just in his slumming mode. I guess he's also some one that doesn't really care about too much apart from just making sure he's enjoying himself.
Do you have a process?
WAAPA tried to teach you a process, but what I've learnt from role to role that, a single process won't ever help anything. One needs to ready to adapt. But I guess the biggest thing that is common in all my work is that. Once I'm in on a project I will read the play, screenplay hopefully two times a day and just constantly comb it for clues. I just need to know the whole thing back to front. And this allows me to be spontaneous in the moment. Now I always edge towards trying to find the funny side of things, it doesn't mean I try to make a wise crack, I just try to keep it real, keep it simple and hopefully a little bit funny. Speaking about it too much though makes you sound like a real wanker.
Who are some of your influences?
I draw the greatest inspiration from Jim Carrey's tenacity to succeed not to mention his absolute devotion to make people laugh.
Sam Rockwell of late. He seems to know exactly when to allow his characters to crack and really shake the audience emotionally. Not to mention he's also a gem of a comedien. But his work in Confessions of a dangerous and Moon are just sublime.
Will Ferrell. Seeing anchorman just made go whoah, who is this guy.
And I also look to Vince Vaughn and Edward Norton for huge inspiration just for the fact that they are both obesely tall like myself. THey both have a dynamism that really bursts out of them.
